Renting in the US
- Under-25 drivers usually pay a young-driver surcharge; minimum age and fee vary by company and state (TBD per booking).
- Collision damage cover may come from your own auto policy or credit card, so check before buying the counter add-on.
- One-way rentals between states can carry large drop fees; compare total price.
Renting in Asia
- Rules vary sharply by country. Japan requires an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention for most foreign licenses; some countries do not accept the IDP route at all, so check the official rules for your destination before booking.
- Many travelers in Asia use trains, buses or a car with driver instead; see our rail & bus guide.

Renting in Dubai & the UAE
- Whether a tourist can drive on their home license, or needs an International Driving Permit, depends on the country that issued it. Check the official rules on Dubai's RTA website before you book. Our full list: TBD.
- Dubai's main roads use Salik electronic tolls, and RTA runs paid public parking. Ask the rental company how tolls and fines are billed back to you.

Renting in India
- India's official tourism FAQ says you can rent a vehicle in India, and that foreign visitors with a valid international driving permit or licence can drive during their stay (checked 1 Nov 2026, per India's official tourism FAQ). India is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on road traffic (per India's Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Road Transport). Carry your home licence with your IDP, and if a document isn't in English, bring an authenticated English translation (rule for foreign-registered vehicles, per the Press Information Bureau).
- Many visitors hire a car with a driver instead of driving themselves. Whether a driver is included depends on the booking, so check before you pay (TBD per provider).
